Our nervous system wants us to be safe from perceived and real threats. In the workplace, this can impact how we give and receive feedback, how we might feel if we’re not included on an email, and how we provide effective trainings. The following article provides information on the SCARF method, developed by David Rock for collaborating and influencing others. https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/SCARF.htm

The acronym stands for the five areas that influence behavior in social situations:

  • Status
  • Certainty
  • Autonomy
  • Relatedness
  • Fairness

The article talks about ways to minimize threats and maximize rewards for these domains in the workplace. If you would like support incorporating these concepts, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) counselors are here to help. Make an appointment by calling 512-471-3366 or email eap@austin.utexas.edu.
